A sale is useful only if the item, total price, and conditions suit you. Start with the purchase decision, then evaluate the offer. A large percentage on a banner cannot answer either question.

Use this checklist before checkout. It does not identify current promotions, verify a retailer's reference price, or predict whether a future sale will be better.

Confirm the need

Write the specific problem the item solves. Then ask whether something you already own can solve it acceptably. If the purchase was not on your list before the offer appeared, give yourself a chance to consider it without the promotional page open.

This is a decision aid, not a mandatory waiting period. A replacement you need promptly deserves different treatment from a second version of something that works. Set a decision date based on your need, rather than a seller's urgency message.

Compare the exact item

Record the model, size, condition, included accessories, and seller. Compare those fields across offers. A different bundle or refurbished unit may be reasonable, but it is a different option.

Do not call an offer a saving solely because a page displays a crossed-out price. If you do not know what you otherwise would have paid, you know the current quoted spend, not your personal saving.

Add the checkout cost

Hypothetical example: One offer lists $80 for an item, adds $12 delivery, and requires an $8 accessory for your task. The usable cost is $100 before tax. Another seller quotes $95 delivered for a package with the required accessory. The second option costs $5 less under these assumptions.

QuestionYour note
What is included?Model and package contents
What must be added?Required accessories and services
What will checkout collect?Item, delivery, taxes, and fees
What repeats later?Consumables, renewal, or service costs
What remains unknown?Any unquoted or conditional amount

Do not enter an unquoted charge as zero. If taxes are excluded from a comparison, label that treatment and keep it consistent.

Read the conditions that unlock the price

Check whether the quoted amount depends on a membership, a coupon you can actually use, a minimum order, a rebate, or enrollment in recurring delivery. Record the normal ongoing terms separately from the introductory amount.

Buying extra items to reach a threshold changes your total spend. A hypothetical $6 delivery fee avoided by adding $15 of unwanted goods is not a $6 reduction in the amount leaving your account. The total basket matters.

A membership may still make sense for purchases you already intend to make. Compare its actual fee and eligible uses rather than spreading it across imagined future orders.

Check the exit conditions

Before paying, locate the seller's applicable return policy. Note the deadline, condition requirements, return shipping, and any restocking charge. Keep a copy alongside the order information. Do not assume that a general policy covers clearance, personalized, or opened items.

If the item has ongoing costs, put both candidates into the Total Cost Comparison. Enter the real checkout amount, use the same horizon, and keep recurring conditions explicit. The tool calculates your model; it does not verify the promotion.

Make a short decision record

Finish with one of three outcomes:

  • Buy: The item meets a real need, fits the available budget, and has acceptable conditions.
  • Wait: A meaningful fact or a personal requirement is unresolved.
  • Pass: The item is unnecessary or fails a requirement despite the offer.

Save the exact offer and policy you relied on. If the result is “wait,” decide what information would change it so that research does not become endless browsing.

Read Price vs Value for the feature decision, and Buy Now or Wait for a structured pause.

Method and limits: Original checklist and invented arithmetic. No current price, discount, stock level, future price, or merchant-specific return right is asserted. Applicable terms must be checked with the actual seller.
